Erin O'Toole is associate curator of photography at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Most recently she collaborated with Leo Rubinfien and Sarah Greenough on the retrospective exhibition Garry Winogrand (2013), which traveled to the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Jeu de Paume in Paris. She is currently organizing a retrospective of the work of Los Angeles based photographer, Anthony Hernandez, which will open at SFMOMA in 2016. O'Toole holds a B.A. in Art History from UC Santa Cruz (Kresge, 1992), an M.A. in Art History from the University of Colorado, Boulder (1998), and a PhD in Art History from the University of Arizona (2010). Her dissertation explores the 1939 founding of the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art, and the transformation of photography into a museum subject.
